What happens when someone scans your QR code
Their phone reads the encoded https://instagram.com/yourusername URL. If Instagram is installed, the phone prompts them to open the profile in the app. If not, it opens in a browser showing the public profile page.
This is a static QR code. The username is encoded permanently at the time you generate it. If you change your Instagram username later, the existing QR code will no longer point to you. Generate a new one after any username change.
File format guide
Use SVG for anything printed. It is a vector format, so it stays perfectly sharp no matter the size, whether it is on a business card or a banner.
Use PNG at 512px or higher for print materials if your design software does not support SVG. For web embeds, 256px to 300px is fine.
Do not use JPEG. JPEG compression softens the edges of the QR pattern and is the most common reason a printed QR code does not scan.
A note on Instagram’s native QR code
Instagram has its own QR code inside the app (found in your profile settings under “QR code”). That code is generated by Instagram and links to a special instagram.com/qr/ URL. It works fine and can be scanned with any camera.
The QR code you create here is different: it is a plain instagram.com/username URL encoded into a standard QR image you can download, resize, print, and embed anywhere. The outcome when scanned is the same, but you control the file.

What size should I print it at?
For business cards, 300px minimum. For flyers and posters, use SVG or PNG at 512px. For large-format printing, always use SVG.
