Most QR code tools are built with public social profiles in mind. GitLab is different. A large portion of GitLab usage happens on private self-hosted instances inside company networks, where linking physical infrastructure to internal documentation is a real, recurring problem.
This tool encodes any GitLab URL into a downloadable QR code image. Whether that is a profile on gitlab.com, a project on your company’s self-managed instance, or a wiki page in a team repository, paste the URL and download the code as PNG, WEBP, or SVG.
GitLab URLs you can encode
gitlab.com profiles. Public profiles sit at https://gitlab.com/username. If you use GitLab as your public portfolio, the same use cases apply as any other developer platform: resume, conference badge, portfolio page.
Projects. A project URL on gitlab.com follows https://gitlab.com/username/project-name or https://gitlab.com/group/subgroup/project-name. These can be several levels deep if your organization uses subgroups. The tool handles the full URL regardless of depth.
Groups and subgroups. GitLab’s group system is one of its stronger organizational features. Group URLs like https://gitlab.com/groupname give a single landing point for an entire team’s work. A QR code pointing to a group can be more useful than pointing to a single project when you want to show the full picture of what a team maintains.
Wikis. Project wikis live at https://gitlab.com/username/project/-/wikis/home or similar. These are underused as a QR code target, but in physical environments like server rooms, labs, or manufacturing floors, a wiki page with runbooks, setup instructions, or maintenance procedures is exactly the kind of thing that benefits from being one scan away.
Specific pages within a project. Issues, merge requests, CI/CD pipeline views, package registries, and release pages all have their own URLs. If you need to point someone at something specific, you can encode that exact page rather than the project root.
Self-hosted GitLab instances. This is where GitLab diverges from most other platforms covered on this site. If your company runs GitLab on its own infrastructure, your URLs start with a custom domain rather than gitlab.com, something like https://gitlab.yourcompany.com/team/project. The tool works with those URLs exactly the same way. There is nothing gitlab.com-specific about how QR codes work.
How to use this tool
- Copy the GitLab URL. Open the profile, project, group, wiki, or any other GitLab page and copy the full address from your browser. For self-hosted instances, make sure you copy the complete URL including your company’s domain.
- Paste it into the field above. The QR code preview appears immediately.
- Adjust colors if needed. The default is black on white. If you are embedding the code in documentation with a colored header or company branding, adjust the colors using the hex pickers. Keep contrast high. Low-contrast combinations that look fine on screen often fail when printed, especially on standard office paper.
- Download the file. SVG for anything printed. PNG at 512px or higher for documentation files, internal wikis, or slide decks that get exported. PNG at 256px for digital-only use.
- Test it before deploying. For anything you are printing and putting on physical equipment, always scan the code on screen first and confirm it opens the correct page. Fixing a wrong QR code on rack-mounted equipment is more annoying than testing it once.
Where teams actually use GitLab QR codes
The use cases here skew toward internal and infrastructure contexts more than public sharing.
Server room and rack labels. When a physical server, switch, or storage unit has a corresponding GitLab repository with its configuration files, runbooks, or deployment history, a QR code sticker on the equipment chassis is a practical shortcut. Anyone standing in front of the rack can scan it and pull up the relevant documentation without having to remember a URL or dig through a wiki manually.
Printed runbooks and incident response docs. Some ops teams keep printed runbook summaries near critical infrastructure. A QR code on the printed sheet pointing to the live GitLab wiki page means the person reading it can jump to the current version of the document, which may have been updated since the sheet was printed.
Office and team boards. Physical Kanban boards, sprint boards, or project status displays in an office sometimes include a QR code linking to the corresponding GitLab project or milestone view. It is a faster path for visitors or new team members who need context on what a team is working on.
Conference talks and technical presentations. GitLab projects and GitLab Pages sites get shared at developer talks in the same way GitHub repos do. A QR code on the final slide gives the audience a direct path to the project or documentation without typing a long URL from the screen.
Hardware and embedded projects. GitLab is used for firmware development and embedded systems work. Like the PCB use case for GitHub, some teams put a QR code on hardware enclosures or circuit boards pointing to the GitLab project. For self-hosted instances, this only works in environments where the device and scanner can reach the internal network, so it is more relevant for in-building infrastructure than products shipped to end users.
Open-source project pages. GitLab hosts a significant amount of open-source software. Project maintainers who present at conferences or publish about their work sometimes include a QR code pointing to the project rather than typing the full URL into slides or printed materials.
A note on self-hosted GitLab instances
If you are generating a QR code for a URL on a self-hosted GitLab instance, keep in mind that the QR code encodes your internal domain. Anyone scanning the code from outside your network will not be able to open it unless your GitLab is publicly accessible or they are connected to your VPN.
For internally distributed codes, that is usually fine. The code is intended for people already on the network: team members, on-site contractors, or anyone in the building with network access. For anything meant for external audiences, use your public gitlab.com URL or a GitLab Pages URL instead.
File format guide
SVG is the best format for print use. It is vector-based and stays sharp at any size, from a small label to a large wall poster.
PNG at 512px covers most print needs when SVG is not supported in your workflow. For A4 or US Letter printed documentation, 512px is sufficient. For larger prints, go higher.
PNG at 256px is fine for digital documents: wiki embeds, slide decks, internal Confluence or Notion pages.
JPEG is not suitable for QR codes. The compression algorithm blurs the boundary between the QR modules, which breaks scanning reliability especially on printed output.
If the code will be printed at a small size, such as on a rack label or equipment sticker, test it at the intended physical size before printing a batch. The minimum recommended printed size for reliable scanning is around 2cm x 2cm, and that assumes good lighting and a reasonable camera.

Frequently asked questions
Does this work with self-hosted GitLab?
Yes. Paste the full URL from your company’s GitLab instance, including your custom domain. The tool encodes whatever URL you provide. Whether it is gitlab.com or an internal domain makes no difference to the QR code itself.
Can I encode a GitLab group URL, not just a project?
Yes. Group URLs like https://gitlab.com/your-group or https://gitlab.com/group/subgroup work the same as project URLs. The code will open the group’s overview page when scanned.
Will the QR code break if my company migrates from self-hosted to gitlab.com?
Yes, if the domain changes, the encoded URL will no longer resolve to anything. If you have printed QR codes pointing to a self-hosted domain and your organization migrates or changes the instance URL, you need to regenerate the codes with the new URL. There is no automatic redirect from one GitLab instance to another.
I need to encode a URL with a deep subgroup path. Will that work?
Yes. GitLab allows multiple levels of subgroups, which can produce long paths like https://gitlab.com/org/team/subteam/project. The tool handles long URLs. The longer the URL, the denser the QR pattern becomes, which can make it harder to scan when printed small. If the URL is very long, consider printing the code at a larger size or using a short link service to shorten it first.
Can I create a QR code for a GitLab wiki page?
Yes. Wiki pages in GitLab have their own URLs, typically in the format https://gitlab.com/username/project/-/wikis/page-name. Paste that full URL into the tool. The QR code will link directly to that specific wiki page rather than the project root.
Does GitLab have its own QR code feature?
No. GitLab does not have a native QR code generator. This tool gives you a downloadable image file that you can use in print, documentation, presentations, or anywhere else. You do not need a GitLab account to use this tool, and nothing about the generated code depends on GitLab’s infrastructure.
Will the QR code expire?
No. The URL is encoded directly into the image. There is no server, redirect, or subscription between the code and the destination. The code stays valid as long as the GitLab URL it encodes is accessible. If the project is deleted, archived, or the instance is shut down, the code will open a dead link because the destination is gone, not because the code itself expired.
What if I need to change the URL after printing?
This tool generates a static QR code. The destination URL cannot be changed after the code is generated without reprinting. If you need to update where a printed code points, encode a short link from a URL shortener that lets you change the destination, rather than encoding the GitLab URL directly. This is particularly relevant for teams that might move projects between groups or migrate between GitLab instances.
Is there a difference between a GitLab QR code and a GitHub QR code?
Not technically. Both are standard URL QR codes. The difference is in context: GitLab is used more heavily in enterprise and self-hosted environments, and the URLs can look quite different from github.com links. The underlying QR encoding is identical.
